CIS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship set to return to Halifax for 2011-2012

CIS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship set to return to Halifax for 2011-2012

HALIFAX, N.S. – At a press conference held this morning in downtown Halifax, Atlantic University Sport (AUS) announced plans for the 2011 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, to be hosted March 11-13 at the Halifax Metro Centre.

This will mark the return of the event to Halifax, Nova Scotia after a brief three year hiatus.  The city has a long and storied history with the high-profile national championship, playing host to it for 24 consecutive years from 1984 to 2007.  The Halifax Metro Centre will once again set the stage for the top university men’s basketball teams in March of 2011 and 2012.

“Atlantic University Sport is excited and proud to bring the Final 8 back to Halifax for 2011 and 2012,” said Phil Currie, Executive Director of Atlantic University Sport. “When we submitted our bid for the 2011 and 2012 events, we focused on the pride, the passion and the people who are the foundation of the event we have all grown to love.”

Currie announced that Mr. Fred MacGillivray, former President and CEO of Trade Centre Limited, will serve as the Honorary Chair of the 2011 CIS Final 8, citing his involvement and personal connection with the championship from 1985-2000.

“Fred is an individual whose passion and pride were instrumental in building and maintaining the legacy of the Final 8 in Halifax,” said Currie. “It is a pleasure to be able recognize his contributions and once again have him involved in the event.”

MacGillivray accepted the chairmanship saying, “I am honoured to serve as Honorary Chair of this prestigious event. To be part of the history of this event was an incredible opportunity and it is great to once again be a part of its return to Atlantic Canada."

Currie was also pleased to announce that Subway, in an extension of their support of university athletics, will be the new presenting sponsor for the 2011 championship.

“This sponsorship allows Subway to further enhance our current positioning with university sport in Atlantic Canada,” commented Scott McKenzie, a local Subway franchisee. “Subway is proud to partner with the 2011 CIS championship and we are excited that it is ‘back in Halifax’ to celebrate its 25th year of hosting the Final 8. On behalf of the over 75 Subway Restaurants in Nova Scotia, we welcome the teams to Halifax and look forward to an excellent competition amongst the best university basketball teams in Canada.”

Mr. John Patterson returns as the Chair of the 2011 Final 8 Organizing Committee and welcomed the tournament back to the city of Halifax by recognizing the committee members, the volunteers and in particular, the grass roots fan base that consistently supports the event.

“After three years away, the fans, volunteers and community are anxious to show the rest of the country that Halifax is still the university basketball capital of Canada,” said Patterson.

Marg McGregor, CIS Chief Executive Officer, was also present for today’s announcements and added CIS’s support for the homecoming. “We are thrilled to see the Final 8 return to Halifax, where CIS men’s basketball history was written and so many memories were made during the event’s extraordinary 24-year tenure in the city.”

The 2011 championship schedule and ticket package information was also announced today. Patterson confirmed that TSN will be returning to broadcast the event and are planning to televise two quarter-final games, both championship semifinals as well as Sunday’s gold medal game.

Ticket packages will go on sale Friday, November 5th, and it should be noted that this year’s event will also feature a bronze medal game featuring the semifinal losers. The last time a bronze medal game was played at the CIS Men’s Basketball Championship was 1986.
